Watch Season Finale Promo of The Big Bang Theory Season 3 Episode 23 The Lunar Excitation

We’re getting pretty late in the season, so this flashback episode is an odd choice. It seems like a filler episode stuck in the middle of the season on either end of a hiatus — not one of the last episodes.

The main reason it was so jarring is because it was so innocuous. Leonard and Penny have gone from dueling parents sharing custody of Sheldon, to two people forced into awkward encounters by virtue of the fact that they live in the same building, to giving each other mani-pedis.

I guess I shouldn’t find this too shocking, since the revelation of Wolowitz and Bernadette’s breakup was nothing more than an aside in last weeks’ episode. That should lay the groundwork of, “Oh, yeah. Penny and Leonard are totally cool with each other now,” even though it doesn’t actually make any sense.

If you can get past the clunkiness of the whole plot, the episode is pretty cute. It’s interesting to see that back in 2003, the dude perm was apparently very much alive. That doesn’t seem right to me, but what do I know? I wasn’t hanging out in California with a bunch of scientists. It is very funny, not to mention very fitting, that Sheldon looks exactly the same.

It’s also nice to see the origins of several things that have been talked about throughout the run of the series, such as the origin of the couch and Sheldon’s seat, the roommate agreement and especially the broken elevator. I’ve been kind of annoyed by the gimmick of it being broken this entire time, but I do appreciate that a rocket fuel explosion is what brought it down. It was also nice in that it underscored one of the main reasons anyone puts up with Sheldon: he’s loyal, despite himself. I’m sure he rationalized it in a way that benefited him (after all, it can’t be easy to find a roommate who passes all three barriers), but the fact that he didn’t turn Leonard in was pretty cool.

Some of my favorite lines from this episode:

Sheldon: “Roommates agree that Friday nights shall be reserved for watching Joss Whedon’s brilliant new series, ‘Firefly.’
Leonard: “Does that really need to be in the agreement?”
Sheldon: “Might as well settle it now; it’s going to be on for years.”

Leonard: “What am I doing in your spam folder?”
Sheldon: “I put you there after you forwarded me a picture of a cat playing the piano entitled, ‘this is funny.’”

“I assure you, you’ll be sorry you wasted your money on an iPod when Microsoft comes out with theirs.” – Sheldon
Leonard: “Is that your dad?”
Wolowitz: “If she grows any more hair on her face, yes.”

Sheldon: “That’s not an apology; that’s simply an acknowledgment that I was right.”
Leonard: “Okay, I’m sorry.”
Sheldon: “There you go.”

The Lunar Excitation” – While Penny worries that dating Leonard has ruined her for normal guys, Wolowitz and Koothrappali search for Sheldon’s perfect match online, on the third season finale of THE BIG BANG THEORY, Monday, May 24 (9:31-10:01 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Wow, Wil Wheaton really is evil. First he plays the dead Mee-Maw card, then he sinks even lower. I mean, he doesn’t sink so low that he’d break up a relationship to win a bowling tournament — or would he? I do love the fact that they used Wheaton for the majority of the episode this time, instead of just having him show up at the end, like they did in his first episode.

041310 1936 TheBigBangT1 The Big Bang Theory Season 3 Episode 19 The Wheaton Recurrence Recap

He had quite the impact on everyone’s lives, although probably not in the way that anyone would have guessed. I don’t know about you, but I certainly wouldn’t have thought that Wil Wheaton was going to alter the entire course of the show. So what do you think about what he did?

The writers seem to have had a bit of a problem with the whole Penny/Leonard relationship this season, and quite frankly, I’ve been expecting the break-up to happen for quite some time. However, having Wil Wheaton rent space in Penny’s head and convince her that she’s just leading Leonard on was a pretty brilliant way to do it.

Although I’m unconvinced that this is truly the end. Sure, Penny may not be ready to tell Leonard she loves him, but she is quoting ‘Empire Strikes Back,’ which is nerd for “love” anyway. I don’t believe she’s actually leading him on; she’s overwhelmed and confused, but I think this pair is ultimately going to get back together. It may take a few episodes, and they may drag it out as much as possible, but this isn’t the end of Leonard and Penny.

A few other things:

  • Wolowitz and Raj trying to guess what went wrong with Leonard and Penny was hysterical — and now it’s even easier to see where their relationships have gone wrong.
  • How long until we see ‘The Wesley Crusher’ shirts?
  • I’m not surprised at all that Raj loved his Catwoman costume so much.

This was one of the best episodes of ‘The Big Bang Theory‘ in a while, not because of all of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ references (I never got into those movies), but because the writers finally figured out a way to get all of the characters together in one plot. Even though Wolowitz and Raj furthered their weird relationship by snuggling during a nap (which was actually only in Sheldon’s dream, which raises even more questions), they weren’t shoved off to the side in a b-plot.

031010 0958 TheBigBangT1 The Big Bang Theory Season 3 Episode 17 The Precious Fragmentation Recap

We got back to the season one dynamic of the four guys having a story, while Penny interacts with them on the periphery. Since Penny has become such a big part of the show, this won’t work for every episode, but it’s nice to see what made us love the show in the first place. Especially since we needed all the happy thoughts in the world to replace the image of Sheldon as Smeagol. Congrats to the makeup crew, but dear God, I never want to see that again.

This episode also illustrates my point about last week’s Stan Lee episode: if you’re going to have one of the gang’s idols guest star, then use them. This entire episode managed to revolve around Peter Jackson and his films, yet it worked perfectly well without him in it. The Stan Lee one could have been the same, instead of just sticking him in toward the end.

But let’s get to the important part of this entire thing: Sheldon’s twin sister. Apparently, we met hr in season 1, but I somehow have absolutely no recollection of this. Maybe we should pretend it never happened and just proceed as though she had never been introduced. That way we can let our imaginations run wild and imagine Sheldon’s perfect twin. All I can picture is a female Sheldon, but I wonder how much alike they would actually be. They don’t get along, so does that mean that she’s completely different from him? Maybe more like Penny? Or do they not get along because they’re too much alike? Which do you want to see? Something new, or do you think the show should just stick with what they’ve already introduced? I feel as though the comedic possibilities are endless here.
