The Big Bang Theory – Jim Parsons interview

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

We heard you got to dress up as Wonder Woman.
I had to dress up as Wonder Woman, let’s be honest.

How was that for you?
Not bad. I didn’t have to show as much flesh as Kunal [Nayyar] who was Catwoman, and showed the entire midriff. I did have a tight-fitting one-piece on that literally had a star on my crotch, and that was odd. And I thought after my first fitting that might actually change – and it didn’t. That’s what we went with. But bravo to our costume designer, because she always makes the right costuming choice. And sex sells, so there.

And despite that outfit I hear that Sheldon may have a love interest later this season?
I’m not playing coy. I’m telling you as an actor: I don’t know what the hell happened!

Which is exactly how it should be with Sheldon, right?
I agree! But I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. Mayim Bialik and I, we were rehearsing all week, and I finally said ‘I keep waiting to figure out what the hell we’re doing!’ And it never happens. And I think you’re right: it didn’t feel wrong because of that. I keep saying, where was the other shoe to drop and the answer provided. There was no answer provided! The answer provided was that apparently it had gone fine and we weren’t doing it anymore, and they were like ‘Okay, we’re moving on, we got that scene.’ And I was like ‘Okay!’

Have you put the word out to Betty White yet that you would love to have her on as Sheldon’s mee-maw?
Well, I saw that it came out in a couple of articles that it had been mentioned, but as far as being proactive, I haven’t done anything. I wouldn’t know where to find her. I don’t know that anybody else has yet, so I don’t know.

There’s a very good chance we’ll talk to her this week. Is there a message you’d like to pass on?
You will? Send my love! Nothing would thrill me more than to get to act in a scene with Betty White!

I’ve got to say, I would have enjoyed a little bit more of Stan Lee in this episode. He didn’t really get to interact with anyone except for Penny. Even though Sheldon was in the scene, he just kind of hung back before dashing into Stan Lee’s house. Instead of seeing another, “what crazy situation can we put Sheldon in” scene, I would have much preferred seeing the events that transpired that ended up leading to Wolowitz and Leonard having gelato with the comic book legend.

030310 0900 TheBigBangT1 The Big Bang Theory Season 3 Episode 16 The Excelsior Acquisition Recap

In fact, the episode left me with more questions about Stan Lee than it answered. Namely, would he really answer his own door, and do he and Hugh Hefner go pajama shopping together? Because that is a reality show I would be interested in watching.

When a show like ‘The Big Bang Theory’ has a guest star as huge as Stan Lee, we really shouldn’t have an episode that not only centers on Sheldon, but centers on a completely different storyline from the one Stan Lee is in. Take, for instance, Wil Wheaton. He wasn’t in the episode very much, but he at least seemed like he was part of the action instead of a random famous guy wedged into the show.

While I wouldn’t say that this episode was bad (I’d be hard-pressed to find more than one or two actual bad episodes from the series’ entire run), it wasn’t one of my favorites. The writers have done a great job with Sheldon, and Jim Parsons absolutely deserved his Emmy nomination.

However, they seem to be leaning on him more and more, at the expense of the rest of the cast. This episode veered dangerously close into the category of, “we have a bunch of people on the show who just set up jokes for Sheldon” territory this week. I sincerely hope that they can back away from this and find their way back to the ensemble comedy that we all fell in love with. Otherwise, I’m not sure how much I’ll really look forward to season four.

The Big Bang Theory – Wil Wheaton Returns

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

Geeks everywhere will be happy hear that Star Trek star Wil Wheaton will be returning to hang out with TV’s hippest nerds on The Big Bang Theory.

“We were very excited when Wil Wheaton appeared as Sheldon’s nemesis, and right now we’re looking to see if he can come back to give Sheldon an opportunity to settle the score,” Executive Producer and Co Creator Bill Prady announced to TV Guide Magazine when the Academy of Televisions Arts and Sciences hosted an Evening With the Big Bang Theory on February 18th. “Fingers crossed that we can do that, I think an arch enemy is someone who appears from time to time.”

In the meantime, fans of the show will have the chance to watch Stan Lee’s cameo on the March 1st episode, as the comic book legend comes to the store to sign autographs. The Spider-Man creator was a huge hit with the cast, although Kaley Cuoco admitted that she didn’t know who he was before he came on! “Jim (Parsons) didn’t either, he had no idea who he was,” she giggled, but Kaley was quickly enamored with Lee. “I loved working with him, he was the cutest thing in the world. I got to have a scene with him, he was adorable and funny, this man has a lot to say.”

Parsons was equally impressed when he met him, and even thought he was similar to the show’s key characters. “He is honestly one of the most charming people who’ve ever had on the show. He reminded me a little bit of Sheldon and a little bit of Penny, he’s got this biting thing to him, he’s just witty.”

Prady says it was really was a dream to have such a legend appear as a guest star. “It’s one of the great things about the show because we are very geeky people ourselves, so being able to have our heroes from the worlds of science fiction and comic books come on the show is wonderful,” he explained. “He plays himself, though I think we made him a little nerdier than he actually is.”

Now his Prady’s next goal is to persuade Leonard Nemoy to guest star, which would be every geek’s dream!

‘Big Bang’ Bazinga! Could Sheldon Be Gay?

Posted by: admin | Comments (0)

As his ‘Star Trek’ hero Mr. Spock might say, this is ‘fascinating.’ When Chuck Lorre was asked to define Sheldon Cooper’s sexual orientation on ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ his answer wasn’t gay. It wasn’t straight. Not even asexual or nonsexual or unsexual. Lorre settled on the term ‘other,’ for Sheldon.

Lorre told Michael Ausiello in Entertainment Weekly that Sheldon’s focus is not on the physical; it’s on physics. And when Ausiello asked ‘Big Bang Theory’ star Jim Parsons what he thought, Parsons said that the object of Sheldon’s affection would be the Nobel Prize, not another human being. Hearing the word that Dr. Sheldon Cooper has been awarded the Nobel Prize in theoretical physics would be Sheldon’s turn on. “That’s the warm embrace that he longs for,” said Jim.

This isn’t the first time that questions have arisen about Sheldon’s state of being. Last year there were some saying his lack of interest in human interaction was a sign that he had a form of autism called Asperger’s Syndrome. Lorre and co-creator Bill Prady shot that one down, just like Lorre has blasted the notion of Sheldon’s sexuality, in particular his disinterest in women, as a sign that he’s gay.

While Howard, Raj and Leonard are all in need of sexual healing of the female persuasion, Sheldon’s simply unmoved by sexual desire of any brand. “‘Alternate reality’ is another way of looking at it,” said Lorre. “Characters like Sheldon are drawn to an alternate reality that might be more comforting than the ones they live in. And why modify that? Why not let the character be that unique?”

Sheldon is a unique character, and if he’s like any other being we’ve seen and loved on TV, it might be Mr. Spock. If you recall, no matter how Nurse Chapel tried, Spock was simply uninterested in romantic entanglements. He only displayed real sexual urges in the ‘Amok Time’ episode, and that was strictly biological. Still, TV fans wanted to see Spock in love. And, perhaps, that’s what we’re seeing with Sheldon.

Jim Parsons thinks so. He told Ausiello, “People want to see him cared for in a way that those of us a little more average have been able to experience through love.”

Lorre concluded that “…If touching other human beings of any gender is irrelevant to him, why label the thing? Why can’t there be a third gender – male, female and Sheldon?” Why indeed?

020910 1802 TheBigBangT1 The Big Bang Theory Season 3 Episode 15 The Large Hadron Collision RecapI’m pinch-hitting for Kona this week due to technical difficulties at the Gallagher homestead. Not sure if I can be the quote machine she is, but you can always add your favorite quotes from the episode into the comments.

You know, I’ve never been one to take Sheldon’s side a lot of the time. As much as I love the character and how Jim Parsons plays him, the fact that a guy who’s such a pill can have four people in his life who like him and tolerate his weird, Aspberger-like selfishness should be enough for me to connect to as a viewer. Most of the time, when Sheldon is wreaking havoc over his friends’ lives, I’m usually feeling bad for whoever it is — usually Leonard — that’s getting the brunt of Sheldon’s utter Sheldonness.

But this week, I was on Team Sheldon. Why? Because Leonard knows Sheldon would appreciate a trip to the CERN super collider a whole lot more than Penny would, even if the lure of Penny in a snow bunny outfit is a strong one to resist.

Forget the ever-present Roommate Agreement for a second. Sheldon’s a physicist. To him, the CERN super collider is akin to a baseball fan visiting Wrigley Field; a near-religious experience that may just give a person new insight. For Leonard to deny him that just because it’s Valentine’s Day and he wants to get laid is kinda douchey on Leonard’s part, image of Snow Penny notwithstanding.

Still, it was fun to see some real emotions out of Sheldon for a change, as he rocketed from jealousy and feelings of betrayal — he actually compared Leonard to Darth Vader, and gave him 30 pieces of silver(ware) to indicate how much of a traitor he thought Leonard was — to craven obsequiousness — complete with Frodo-shaped pancakes — to genuine happiness when Penny said she’d talk to Leonard about the trip. When was the last time Leonard hugged anyone? The funniest moment of the night was when he said he was looking to Penny for guidance on when to stop hugging.

The only moment where Sheldon was being pure in his condescension was when he showed Penny the PowerPoint on why he should go to Switzerland instead of her. Though, when it comes right down to it, where is Penny going to have the better time? A super collider or Bath and Body Works?

Anyway, Sheldon really paid for his momentary lapse of personal space maintenance, didn’t he? And Raj ended up being the winner. One day ol’ Raj will be able to talk to a woman without having alcohol in his system. But until then, he’s going to be planning a lot of “me days” on February 14.

As Dr. Sheldon Cooper on ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ Jim Parsons is a big bang of funny week in and week out. Oh, yes, he’s not working alone. He has a wonderful group of actors around him and they’re also very funny characters. But the breakout star on that show from the very start has been Jim.

020610 0933 TheBigBangT1 The Big Bang Theory: Jim Parsons Stands Up 2 Cancer and Its Great

But is it the character or the actor? Hmm … if only there was a way to see Jim doing something else. Well, ta-da, here it is. Watch this public service announcement created by the folks at Stand Up to Cancer. If you had any doubt that Jim Parsons is a comic wizard, this will dispel them.

Oh, before you watch, notice that all the wild and crazy characters are Jim. The man on the guitar, singing “Up2 You + Me” is Zach Selwyn.

The joy of the spot is reminiscent of young Pee-Wee Herman, especially the way he was on ‘Pee-Wee’s Playhouse.’ You know, that would be great casting. Pee-Wee as Sheldon’s father. Hmm … that would be something. Although it’s hard to imagine Pee-Wee involved with Laurie Metcalf like it’s hard to imagine Sheldon romantically involved with any being in the known universe.
