Who knew that, of all the broadcast networks, CBS would be the one making the most news during upfronts week? Not only did the Eye Net cancel a slew of shows, but it also decided to take one of their highest-rated comedies, ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ and use it to start a comedy block on Thursdays.

Think about that for a second: When was the last time CBS had comedies on Thursdays? Take a random tour through the various primetime schedules through the years, and you’ll find out that it has happened rarely, if ever. But CBS knows what it has in ‘Big Bang,’ which is a strong show with an ardent following.
But it also knows what it doesn’t have: a lot of strong competition, especially when it comes to comedy. Which is why this is a gamble that just might work.
Moving a hit show to a new night in an attempt to build a new programming block is a move that’s as old as television. Sometimes it works — NBC briefly built a second comedy beachhead after moving ‘Frasier’ from Thursdays to Tuesdays — and sometimes it doesn’t — like anytime CBS has tried moving one of their Monday comedy hits to Wednesdays in recent years.
In this case, CBS isn’t really taking on an established hit at 8PM on Thursdays. With ‘Survivor’ moving to Wednesdays, ‘Bones’ is the biggest show in that timeslot, and may attract a lot of the same geek audience that likes ‘Big Bang.’ But, remember, this season ‘Big Bang’ surpassed its lead-in, ‘Two and a Half Men,’ to become the number one comedy in the adult demo, so its audience is much more broad-based than just sci fi and comics fans.
But who CBS is really gunning for with this move is NBC. The network knows that, while the Peacock’s slate of Thursday comedies are critically-acclaimed, the shows tend to get weak ratings, a fact that’s especially true of the 8PM block of ‘Community’ and ‘Parks and Recreation.’ ‘Parks and Rec’ isn’t even coming back until midseason; ’30 Rock,’ which has a slightly larger following but isn’t a ratings powerhouse, will slide into ‘Parks and Rec’s’ 8:30PM slot.
So, with a wounded opponent in NBC, a new series on ABC, ‘Bones’ on Fox, and a new, buzzworthy show to push in William Shatner’s ‘!*#$@ My Dad Says,’ this move makes a heck of a lot more sense when you look at the big picture.
“We’re not in the charity business,” scheduling chief Kelly Kahl told James Hibberd of The Live Feed. “The performance of [NBC's] comedies is not something that deterred us. People like those shows, but they’re not setting the world on fire ratings wise.”
If you’re a fan of both ‘Big Bang’ and ‘Community,’ is this going to make your viewing life tougher? Maybe. There’s a lot of audience overlap between the two shows, but it’s also a very DVR/on demand/online-savvy group. I don’t tend to watch either show in real time; there’s been many a time when I’ve DVRed one or the other. Heck, I watched the entire first third of ‘Community’s’ season on Hulu. Neither show has that “event” feel that compels viewers to watch it when it airs.
So, realistically, there’s room for both to exist on the schedule. If the Thursday status quo holds — ‘Big Bang’ gets as many viewers as ‘Survivor’ did and ‘Community’ stays the same — both CBS and NBC will likely be satisfied.
And if ‘Big Bang’ and ‘!*#$@ My Dad Says’ get hammered? ‘Big Bang’ goes back to Mondays and Shatner goes back to his 5,000 other jobs. Seems like a low-risk move to me.
We’re getting pretty late in the season, so this flashback episode is an odd choice. It seems like a filler episode stuck in the middle of the season on either end of a hiatus — not one of the last episodes.
The main reason it was so jarring is because it was so innocuous. Leonard and Penny have gone from dueling parents sharing custody of Sheldon, to two people forced into awkward encounters by virtue of the fact that they live in the same building, to giving each other mani-pedis.
I guess I shouldn’t find this too shocking, since the revelation of Wolowitz and Bernadette’s breakup was nothing more than an aside in last weeks’ episode. That should lay the groundwork of, “Oh, yeah. Penny and Leonard are totally cool with each other now,” even though it doesn’t actually make any sense.
If you can get past the clunkiness of the whole plot, the episode is pretty cute. It’s interesting to see that back in 2003, the dude perm was apparently very much alive. That doesn’t seem right to me, but what do I know? I wasn’t hanging out in California with a bunch of scientists. It is very funny, not to mention very fitting, that Sheldon looks exactly the same.
It’s also nice to see the origins of several things that have been talked about throughout the run of the series, such as the origin of the couch and Sheldon’s seat, the roommate agreement and especially the broken elevator. I’ve been kind of annoyed by the gimmick of it being broken this entire time, but I do appreciate that a rocket fuel explosion is what brought it down. It was also nice in that it underscored one of the main reasons anyone puts up with Sheldon: he’s loyal, despite himself. I’m sure he rationalized it in a way that benefited him (after all, it can’t be easy to find a roommate who passes all three barriers), but the fact that he didn’t turn Leonard in was pretty cool.
Some of my favorite lines from this episode:
Sheldon: “Roommates agree that Friday nights shall be reserved for watching Joss Whedon’s brilliant new series, ‘Firefly.’
Leonard: “Does that really need to be in the agreement?”
Sheldon: “Might as well settle it now; it’s going to be on for years.”
Leonard: “What am I doing in your spam folder?”
Sheldon: “I put you there after you forwarded me a picture of a cat playing the piano entitled, ‘this is funny.’”
“I assure you, you’ll be sorry you wasted your money on an iPod when Microsoft comes out with theirs.” – Sheldon
Leonard: “Is that your dad?”
Wolowitz: “If she grows any more hair on her face, yes.”
Sheldon: “That’s not an apology; that’s simply an acknowledgment that I was right.”
Leonard: “Okay, I’m sorry.”
Sheldon: “There you go.”

“The Lunar Excitation” – While Penny worries that dating Leonard has ruined her for normal guys, Wolowitz and Koothrappali search for Sheldon’s perfect match online, on the third season finale of THE BIG BANG THEORY, Monday, May 24 (9:31-10:01 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Those are some serious daggers Sheldon is shooting special guest star Mayim Bialik in this exclusive image from The Big Bang Theory‘s May 24 season finale. But there’s a thin line between loathing and lust — the only question is whether Jim Parson’s asexual physicist will cross it. A possible clue can be found in the fine print of the ex-Blossom star’s Big Bang contract. Sources confirm that the hitcom’s producers have an option to bring her brainiac alter ego back next fall.
Wow, Wil Wheaton really is evil. First he plays the dead Mee-Maw card, then he sinks even lower. I mean, he doesn’t sink so low that he’d break up a relationship to win a bowling tournament — or would he? I do love the fact that they used Wheaton for the majority of the episode this time, instead of just having him show up at the end, like they did in his first episode.

He had quite the impact on everyone’s lives, although probably not in the way that anyone would have guessed. I don’t know about you, but I certainly wouldn’t have thought that Wil Wheaton was going to alter the entire course of the show. So what do you think about what he did?
The writers seem to have had a bit of a problem with the whole Penny/Leonard relationship this season, and quite frankly, I’ve been expecting the break-up to happen for quite some time. However, having Wil Wheaton rent space in Penny’s head and convince her that she’s just leading Leonard on was a pretty brilliant way to do it.
Although I’m unconvinced that this is truly the end. Sure, Penny may not be ready to tell Leonard she loves him, but she is quoting ‘Empire Strikes Back,’ which is nerd for “love” anyway. I don’t believe she’s actually leading him on; she’s overwhelmed and confused, but I think this pair is ultimately going to get back together. It may take a few episodes, and they may drag it out as much as possible, but this isn’t the end of Leonard and Penny.
A few other things:
-
Wolowitz and Raj trying to guess what went wrong with Leonard and Penny was hysterical — and now it’s even easier to see where their relationships have gone wrong.
-
How long until we see ‘The Wesley Crusher’ shirts?
-
I’m not surprised at all that Raj loved his Catwoman costume so much.

We heard you got to dress up as Wonder Woman.
I had to dress up as Wonder Woman, let’s be honest.
How was that for you?
Not bad. I didn’t have to show as much flesh as Kunal [Nayyar] who was Catwoman, and showed the entire midriff. I did have a tight-fitting one-piece on that literally had a star on my crotch, and that was odd. And I thought after my first fitting that might actually change – and it didn’t. That’s what we went with. But bravo to our costume designer, because she always makes the right costuming choice. And sex sells, so there.
And despite that outfit I hear that Sheldon may have a love interest later this season?
I’m not playing coy. I’m telling you as an actor: I don’t know what the hell happened!
Which is exactly how it should be with Sheldon, right?
I agree! But I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. Mayim Bialik and I, we were rehearsing all week, and I finally said ‘I keep waiting to figure out what the hell we’re doing!’ And it never happens. And I think you’re right: it didn’t feel wrong because of that. I keep saying, where was the other shoe to drop and the answer provided. There was no answer provided! The answer provided was that apparently it had gone fine and we weren’t doing it anymore, and they were like ‘Okay, we’re moving on, we got that scene.’ And I was like ‘Okay!’
Have you put the word out to Betty White yet that you would love to have her on as Sheldon’s mee-maw?
Well, I saw that it came out in a couple of articles that it had been mentioned, but as far as being proactive, I haven’t done anything. I wouldn’t know where to find her. I don’t know that anybody else has yet, so I don’t know.
There’s a very good chance we’ll talk to her this week. Is there a message you’d like to pass on?
You will? Send my love! Nothing would thrill me more than to get to act in a scene with Betty White!
